Once common throughout Ireland, the barn owl was even said to have been seen in Dublin, nesting in St Stephens Green & roosting in St Patrick's Cathedral in the mid-nineteenth century. The Irish barn owl population is now of great concern, with efforts being made to install special nesting boxes across Irish farmland areas. Still mainly wintering here in Ireland, they are spotted predominantly in the South West most commonly at night.
In European mythology, similar to that of Greece, the owl was sacred to Pallas Athene, goddess of wisdom & victory. In ancient Rome, these silently skilled predators were greatly feared as messengers of death. Surprisingly however, Irish folklore is greatly lacking in mentions of the barn owl, mainly depicting this much loved bird as an object of humour. In Donegal, a person who thought they had a good singing voice, but in fact did not, was known as a ‘sréachóg reilige’ (literally a ‘churchyard screecher’)
