Although its naming origins are somewhat obscure, if you know Dublin, you’ll know the Forty Foot. Mentioned in the opening pages of Joyce's Ulysses and part of the Dublin Bay UNESCO biosphere, this was originally a male-only bathing spot until the feminist protests of the 1970s, rightfully establishing the right for it to be enjoyed by all.

Sometimes you're basking in its cool waters during the inevitable leaving cert heatwave and other times you're bracing every inch of your body for its icy depths.

Regardless if you're the hardy all year rounder, christmas dipper or occasional swimmer, one thing is certain. The Forty Foot is about the people and remembering, it's never cold, it's fresh.
